River City Ransom Password

In the following code, all of the bosses except for Slick have been beaten--this means you can run through the game if you so wish without having to beat all of the bosses.  In your inventory, you have Stone Hands, Dragon Feet, Acro Circus, Grand Slam, and 4 Karma Jolts.  Stats are maxed out at 63 for Punch, Kick, Weapon, Throwing, Agility, Defense, Strength, and Will Power.  Stamina and Max Power are both 127.  You also have $999.99 to spend.  I don't think I've seen another password listed that has maxed out stats without using Texas Boots; this code frees up that additional inventory slot.  I did not equip Fatal Steps and Javelin Man because they're not very useful.

River City Ransom password (case sensitive):

XfMdZTHUPR3
rztzPeQUCTt
61lxhtWRoZb

(to avoid ambiguity, in the third line, the second and third characters are the number one and lowercase "L")

You can also try the River City Ransom password generator.

This video's purpose is to serve as a walkthrough, not as a time to beat, although it's still pretty brief at 46:40, including the intro and all of the credits. I tried to take the time to show myself getting items and taking precautions that seasoned players may not bother with.  Additionally, some time is added to the video because I show the password after every stage.  I did not make an extraordinary effort to beat the game without getting hit.

Stage Order
You're bound to see a different order elsewhere--I haven't seen anyone else who likes to complete Air Man's stage first--however, I've seen some puzzling orders where people play Flash or Quick before getting Air, Quick before getting Bubble, or Crash before getting Metal.  In the walkthrough, I tried to use a minimal assortment of weaponry to allow you to create your own preferred order.  Here I list what weapons and items I suggest using in every stage.  Optional weapons that others may prefer to use are in parentheses.

Air Man: Pellet (Leaf Shield, Metal)
Metal: Pellet, Item 2
Flash: Metal, Item 2, Air, Pellet (Item 1/3)
Bubble: Metal (Pellet, Item 2)
Quick: Item 3, Metal, Bubble, Flash, Air, Pellet
Wood: Metal (Bubble, Pellet)
Crash: Metal, Pellet, Leaf, Item 2, Air (Item 1)
Heat: Metal, Quick, Item 2, Air, Pellet, Bubble
Dr. Wily 1: Metal, Item 3, Item 1, Quick, Pellet (Leaf)
Dr. Wily 2: Metal, Item 2, Item 3, Pellet
Dr. Wily 3: Metal, Quick
Dr. Wily 4: Pellet, Bubble, Metal, Air, Crash, Item 1 (Item 2)
Dr. Wily 5: Bubble, Pellet, Metal, Flash, Air (Leaf)
Dr. Wily 6: Bubble

Password Grid

In my video, I showed the passwords that I had after every stage, but if you would like to skip some different stages, you can use the password grid below.  First, choose how many energy tanks you would like to have.  Then use the rest of the coordinates in the column.  If do not want to play the stage, choose the first coordinate; choosing the coordinate in parentheses will allow you to play the stage.

Energy Tanks 0 1 2 3 4

A-1 A-2 A-3 A-4 A-5
Heat Man B-2,(D-5) B-3,(E-1) B-4,(E-2) B-5,(E-3) C-1,(E-4)
Air Man E-3,(D-2) E-4,(D-3) E-5,(D-4) B-1,(D-5) B-2,(E-1)
Wood Man D-3,(B-5) D-4,(C-1) D-5,(C-2) E-1,(C-3) E-2,(C-4)
Bubble Man D-1,(C-3) D-2,(C-4) D-3,(C-5) D-4,(D-1) D-5,(D-2)

Notes and questions:

Q: How was this video made?
A: I used Windows Media Encoder to record gameplay. The video is complete, uncut, and at normal speed, although there may be times during more active scenes when the video is choppier.  The resolution and framerate were chosen in order to have a small enough file that I would be able to encode realtime while preserving serviceable quality.  If anyone knows of a more effective capture technique, please let me know.

Q: Did you cheat?
A: No, everything was done without the aid of any cheats, codes, or turbo buttons.  Visual anomalies--most visibly the appearance of the spread gun's bullets and the boss at the end of Base2--are by-products of the video capture itself.

Q: Why did you make this video?  Contra's an old game!
A: Even though it is over 10 years old, I still hear Contra mentioned every once in a while for its gameplay, place in gaming history, or for its well-known--and, as you can see by the video, unnecessary--30 life code.  I had never seen a video walkthrough of a full game, and I thought that a video of the full game would be entertaining, more effective, and faster to produce than any written guide.

Q: You think you're real hot, huh?
A: No, not at all.  I just hope people will enjoy watching the video and/or learning something about Contra.  The video's purpose is to serve as a walkthrough, and it should not be viewed as a time to beat.  As it was recorded in one shot (as opposed to stage-by-stage), the video is far from perfect.  I'm sure there are people who can finish the game in even less than 14 minutes, especially if they are playing in 2-player mode, although I don't think more than a minute or two can be trimmed off of my time.

Q: What's your favorite weapon?
A: Back in the day, I liked laser since it packed the power of four bullets into one shot.  However, I was also playing with my friend, who used spread to cover us both.  Since then, spread has been the clear cut favorite.  In one-player, spread is the most practical weapon and is by far the most powerful in the game, not for its arc of fire, but for the raw number of bullets fired at once--5.  That makes spread an even more effective close range weapon than laser; you may notice that I sometimes jump up or otherwise try to get closer to enemy targets while firing in order to inflict greater damage.

Notes and questions:

I had originally posted another version of the file prior to this one where, since some viewers thought that I had used a turbo button in the Contra walkthrough, I intentionally fired more slowly. However, I was not completely satisfied with the overall quality of the video, so I'm sharing what I think is a better run through the game where I gave a full effort. I hope you enjoy it.

Things to observe:
Q: Which game is more difficult, Super C or Contra?
A: Super C by far. There are more enemies, enemies appear more randomly, and turrets and men fire at more angles.

Q: What is the most difficult stage?
A: If we're talking about completing without dying and not most difficult to do quickly, then probably Area 6. Those mouths sometimes come out from right underneath you.

Q: What is your favorite weapon?
A: Flame thrower, although I usually use spread because it's a safer weapon when playing 1-player. When you hold down B and then release to fire, flame thrower rewards accuracy by delivering more direct destructive capability than any other weapon and does localized damage around the target area, which is useful near the end of Area 8. It goes through weaker enemies like laser, travels quickly, and has a greater range than any weapon on the overhead stages.

Q: If you were going for a best time, where could you go more quickly?
A: Several locations, although I went pretty quickly.  In some areas such as the enemy behind the bricks in Area 1, the in-ground turrets in Area 3, or the bubbles in Area 4, you can jump over or run right past them.  Bosses can definitely be destroyed more quickly with 2 players or, in most cases, if I had flame thrower.
